The format

A backyard ultra has no finish in the usual sense. Every hour on the hour, a lap of 6.7 kilometres begins. Anyone who fails to complete it in time, or is not in the starting area for the next lap, is out. The race only ends when one runner is left — and that runner has to complete a final lap alone to win officially.

The rules

The setting is deliberately spare. No power in the base camp, water in containers, and I sort out my own food. Three by three metres — that is all the space anyone gets for their camp.

From dusk onwards a headlamp is mandatory. I may bring up to three crew members, but they can only help me in the base camp: taking anything from anyone out on the course means disqualification. Spectators are not admitted, and the organiser keeps the exact location secret.
